US Ambassador Sergio Gor made his first independent visit to Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 and the 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, holding talks with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Srinagar. Following the meeting, Gor described Jammu and Kashmir as an important part of India and praised the significant measures taken by the Centre and the Union Territory administration to strengthen security and make the region safer.

The US envoy also indicated that Washington could review its Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory for Jammu and Kashmir in the future. While he stopped short of announcing any immediate change, Gor said the United States regularly assesses its travel advisories and that the improvements in the security situation would be taken into account during future reviews.

Calling the region “incredibly beautiful,” Gor said he was pleased to visit Jammu and Kashmir and described his meeting with Omar Abdullah as warm and productive. He said the discussions would be followed up in both Washington and New Delhi with the aim of further strengthening bilateral engagement. Gor highlighted the progress made in improving safety across Jammu and Kashmir, suggesting that the region could offer considerable opportunities for American visitors, particularly in tourism and other economic sectors.

Following the meeting, Omar Abdullah said on X that the discussions covered ways to expand and strengthen ties between Jammu and Kashmir and the United States. Areas including tourism, horticulture and the emerging economy were among the issues discussed. The Chief Minister also expressed his willingness to continue the engagement. Gor separately said he appreciated the opportunity to meet Abdullah and gain a better understanding of his priorities. According to the envoy, the talks focused on expanding economic cooperation and developing opportunities that could benefit both sides.

Before Gor's arrival in Srinagar, Abdullah had made it clear that he was prepared for the meeting but maintained that matters concerning Jammu and Kashmir's governance are India's internal affairs. He stressed that local issues would be addressed by the government in New Delhi rather than through foreign intervention.

Abdullah also said he would discuss Jammu and Kashmir with the US ambassador but reiterated that the region's domestic affairs fall within India's jurisdiction. The visit represents an important diplomatic interaction, combining discussions on security, tourism and economic cooperation with Washington's potential reassessment of its travel advisory for Jammu and Kashmir. It also underlines Srinagar's effort to expand international economic engagement while maintaining that governance-related matters remain strictly domestic.
