A new controversy has surfaced regarding the tragic death of actress Sowmya Sathyanarayana, widely known by her stage name, Soundarya. She tragically lost her life in a plane crash in 2004. Soundarya was best remembered for her role as Radha Singh in the 1999 Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Sooryavansham. As per an NDTV report, a complaint has been filed against veteran Telugu actor Mohan Babu in Andhra Pradesh’s Khammam district. The complaint alleges that Soundarya’s death might not have been accidental but was instead linked to a property dispute.
Social activist Chittimallu, who lodged the complaint, claims that Mohan Babu pressured Soundarya and her brother to sell a six-acre property in Shamshabad. When they refused, tensions escalated between the two actors. Following Soundarya’s untimely death, Mohan Babu allegedly took control of the land. Soundarya passed away on April 17, 2004, in a plane crash while en route to a political event in Karimnagar. She was only 31 years old and was reportedly pregnant at the time. Shockingly, her body was never recovered from the crash site.
The activist is now demanding an official investigation into Mohan Babu’s alleged involvement in the land dispute. He has also called on authorities to seize the contested property. Additionally, he has sought police protection, claiming he has received threats over the issue. The complaint also references a separate land dispute involving Mohan Babu and his son, Manchu Manoj, which had previously made headlines.
So far, no FIR has been registered, and Mohan Babu has not issued any response regarding the allegations. Authorities have also yet to comment on the matter. Soundarya was a celebrated actress in Telugu cinema and also worked in Kannada, Tamil, Hindi, and Malayalam films. She was widely regarded as one of the most successful actresses in Telugu film history. Her accolades include three Nandi Awards, two Karnataka State Film Awards, and six Filmfare Awards South. In 2002, she won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film as a producer for the critically acclaimed Kannada movie Dweepa.
