Ethnic violence in Manipur, which began on May 3, 2023, has displaced a total of 58,821 people up to March 30 this year, according to information released by the state government. The figures were shared by the Home Department Secretariat on April 20 in response to a Right to Information request filed by Manipur Congress leader Hareshwar Goshwami.

Regarding casualties, the department stated that 217 people have lost their lives in connection with the violence. This number is based on ex-gratia compensation provided to the next of kin of the deceased. In addition to the loss of lives, the unrest has caused widespread destruction of property and infrastructure across affected regions.

As of March 10, 2026, a total of 174 relief camps were operating to accommodate those displaced by the conflict. To address housing needs, around 3,000 pre-fabricated homes have been constructed by the Manipur Police Housing Corporation Ltd. These temporary structures are intended to provide shelter to families who lost their homes during the violence.

The government also reported that 7,894 houses were completely destroyed, while another 2,646 houses were partially damaged since the outbreak of the conflict. Highlighting the difficulty in obtaining this information, Goshwami stated in a social media post that it took him seven months of persistent effort to access the data on internally displaced persons. The violence primarily involved clashes between the valley-based Meitei community and the Kuki community residing in the hill districts, leading to prolonged instability in the state.
