US authorities have taken a 16 year old student into custody following a shooting incident at a high school in Rockville.

An active situation was reported at Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville on Tuesday afternoon, triggering an immediate response from law-enforcement agencies. Authorities later confirmed that a 16-year-old student was taken into custody in connection with a shooting inside the school. The Rockville City Police Department said officers were responding to an active incident at the high school and directed media personnel to stage at the Korean Presbyterian Church of Rockville on Hurley Avenue.
According to the Montgomery County Department of Police, officers from the department’s 1st District, along with Rockville City Police and support from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, arrived at the school around 2:15 pm after receiving reports of a shooting. Responding officers found a 16-year-old male student from Gaithersburg with a single gunshot wound in a school hallway. Police said the injured student was taken to a nearby hospital and is in stable condition.
The suspected shooter, identified as a 16-year-old male student who lives in Rockville, was quickly located and taken into custody near the school. Investigators have confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public. As a safety measure, the school was placed under lockdown, and students were later transported to a reunification location around 4:30 pm. Authorities said reunification is being conducted at Robert Frost Middle School on Scott Drive.
Police stated that the suspect will be charged as an adult, with formal charges to be determined in consultation with the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office. The suspect’s identity has not been released. The Rockville City Police Department is leading the investigation, and additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
