US Approves 428 Million dollar Support Package for India's Apache Helicopters and M777 Howitzers

The United States has approved a defence support package worth around $428 million to assist India in maintaining and sustaining two of its key military assets — the Apache attack helicopters and the M777 ultra-light howitzers. The approval focuses on long-term operational support rather than new weapon procurement.
According to reports, the package is designed to improve the readiness, maintenance, and technical efficiency of these systems, which are already in active service with the Indian Armed Forces. A significant portion of the funding will go toward sustaining India’s fleet of AH-64E Apache helicopters, including supply of spare parts, technical assistance, repair support, and training for personnel. The Apache is widely regarded as one of the most advanced attack helicopters in the world, known for its precision strike capability and effectiveness in complex battlefield conditions.
The remaining support is directed toward the M777A2 ultra-light howitzers, which are valued for their mobility and ability to be deployed in high-altitude and difficult terrains. These artillery systems have played an important role in strengthening India’s defensive and offensive capabilities in mountainous regions, where rapid deployment and lightweight equipment are essential.
Defence experts note that this approval reflects the continuing expansion of India–US strategic defence cooperation, particularly in areas related to equipment sustainment and lifecycle support. Instead of focusing only on new purchases, both countries are increasingly investing in ensuring long-term performance and reliability of existing platforms.
The agreement is also expected to involve leading US defence contractors, who will provide technical expertise, logistics support, and engineering services under the programme. The package is seen as a move that will enhance the operational readiness and longevity of India’s key defence systems while further strengthening bilateral defence ties between New Delhi and Washington.
