Washington: US President Donald Trump on Thursday said that the United States is earning significantly from its trade relationship with India and hinted that a trade agreement between the two countries could be finalized soon. Speaking to reporters during an interaction at the White House, Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and referred to him as a “good friend,” while expressing optimism over the ongoing trade negotiations between New Delhi and Washington.

“We’re making a lot of money with India. A deal with India is coming,” Trump said, indicating that discussions between the two sides are progressing positively. The statement comes amid renewed efforts by India and the US to strengthen economic ties through a broader bilateral trade agreement aimed at reducing tariff barriers and improving market access.

Trump also reiterated his long-standing criticism of India’s earlier tariff structure, claiming that American businesses had faced difficulties entering the Indian market in the past. He again cited Harley-Davidson motorcycles as an example of high import duties previously imposed by India.

The former US president suggested that the current trade environment has become more favorable for American companies. Trade officials from both countries have recently held multiple rounds of discussions focusing on sectors such as manufacturing, digital trade, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and technology. The negotiations are also expected to address supply chain cooperation and investment opportunities.

India and the United States have witnessed rapidly growing economic cooperation over the past few years, with bilateral trade crossing significant milestones. The US remains one of India’s largest trading partners, while India continues to emerge as a major market for American businesses. Experts believe a potential trade agreement could benefit exporters, increase foreign investment and deepen strategic ties between the two countries at a time when global supply chains are undergoing major changes.

Trump’s latest remarks also reflect the strong personal rapport he has maintained with Prime Minister Modi over the years. The two leaders have frequently praised each other during international events and bilateral meetings. Although neither side has officially announced a final agreement, Trump’s comments suggest that negotiations may be moving toward a breakthrough in the near future.
