Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Thursday that the government will prioritize expanding rail connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, focusing on linking Poonch and Rajouri to the national railway network and developing a rail route to the Uri border town in Baramulla district. He noted that detailed project reports for these initiatives have already been prepared and efforts will be made to begin work soon.

The minister flagged off the first direct Vande Bharat Express between Srinagar and Jammu, describing it as a significant milestone and a lifeline for the region. He highlighted that the service, originally launched between Katra and Kashmir by the prime minister last year, has seen full occupancy and strong demand, leading to an expansion from eight to 20 coaches.

Vaishnaw added that the train has greatly benefited Kashmir’s economy by enabling the transport of goods such as cement, vehicles, and agricultural produce. He mentioned that cement prices have dropped and large quantities of apples and other fruits have been shipped to different parts of the country via rail.

He also emphasized the train’s all-weather capability, stating that it can operate even in extreme conditions, including temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius and heavy snowfall. Calling it the first train to run at such high altitudes, he said it will significantly improve the movement of goods and passengers across the region.
