The arrival of the monsoon has brought severe weather conditions across several parts of India, causing widespread disruption, flooding, landslides, and loss of lives. At least 15 people have died in rain-related incidents across Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, and Odisha, while authorities in affected states have intensified rescue and relief efforts to deal with the situation.

Maharashtra has faced the worst impact of the heavy rainfall, with the state’s monsoon-related death toll rising to 13 on Monday. Pune witnessed multiple rain-triggered tragedies, where four people lost their lives in separate incidents. Three members of a family were killed after a landslide, while another person died when a wall collapsed due to the impact of heavy showers. Two more people were swept away in different rain-related incidents as intense rainfall battered the district.

Following the devastation, authorities evacuated more than 500 people from vulnerable locations and shifted them to safer areas. The continuous rainfall has raised concerns over further flooding and landslide risks in several parts of the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad, warning of heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. Mumbai witnessed cloudy weather and strong winds on Tuesday morning, offering some relief after two days of relentless rainfall that disrupted normal life across the city.

The earlier downpour brought Mumbai’s infrastructure under severe pressure, with several roads submerged, trees uprooted, and multiple incidents of wall and billboard collapses reported. As a precautionary measure, schools and colleges across the city, including government, private, and civic-run institutions, remained closed on Tuesday. The heavy rains also affected connectivity between Mumbai and Pune after a tunnel section on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway’s newly inaugurated "Missing Link" bypass suffered damage following a landslide. Traffic movement on the route was restored late Monday after remaining suspended for nearly 18 hours.

Rail and air services in Maharashtra also faced major disruptions due to waterlogging and landslides. More than 40 Western Railway services were impacted, with several trains cancelled, diverted, or short-terminated. Meanwhile, five flights scheduled to land in Mumbai were diverted because of poor weather conditions.

In Himachal Pradesh, heavy overnight rainfall triggered flash floods, landslides, and road blockages in various districts. A 14-year-old girl lost her life in a rain-related incident as authorities worked to restore connectivity in affected areas. The IMD issued an orange alert for Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, and Solan districts, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in these regions.

Odisha also remained on high alert as continuous rainfall affected several parts of the state for the third consecutive day due to a depression over the region. A two-year-old girl died amid the adverse weather conditions, while authorities warned of more intense rainfall ahead. The IMD advised fishermen not to venture into the sea due to unsafe conditions caused by rough weather.

Several districts in Odisha, including Cuttack, Kandhamal, Sambalpur, Sonepur, and Bargarh, continued to keep schools closed as a precautionary step to ensure the safety of students. Jammu and Kashmir faced disruptions after heavy rains triggered flash floods and landslides in the region. The Doda-Kishtwar highway was damaged, affecting traffic movement, while several vehicles were buried under debris near the under-construction 540 MW Kwar Hydroelectric Project in Kishtwar district. With more rainfall forecast in many affected regions, disaster management teams and local administrations remain on alert. Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines as the monsoon continues to create challenges across the country.
