Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday voiced support for workers protesting in Noida, saying their demand for higher minimum wages highlights the broader economic struggles faced by labourers. His statement comes after protests over wage demands escalated into violence on Monday, including stone-pelting and vehicles being set on fire following clashes with police.

In a post on X, Gandhi described the unrest as the “final outcry” of workers whose concerns have long been ignored. He pointed out that many workers earn around ₹12,000 a month, while rent alone takes up ₹4,000–7,000. Even small annual salary increases are offset by rising living costs, leaving workers financially strained.

He added that stagnant wages and rising inflation are pushing labourers deeper into debt, calling this the reality behind claims of a “developed India.” He also highlighted the struggles of women workers, noting that essentials like cooking gas have become increasingly expensive without corresponding wage growth. Gandhi further argued that global factors such as rising fuel prices, disrupted supply chains due to conflicts in West Asia, and international trade tensions have worsened the situation. However, he claimed that the burden has largely fallen on workers rather than industrialists.

He also criticised the government’s labour reforms, particularly the implementation of four labour codes in November 2025, which he said extended working hours to 12 hours a day without adequate consultation. He questioned whether workers who struggle to support their families despite long hours are unreasonable in seeking better pay. Emphasising that workers in Noida are demanding ₹20,000 a month, Gandhi said this is not excessive but a basic necessity. Reaffirming his stance, he said he stands with workers, describing them as the backbone of the country who are being unfairly burdened.
