When filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri's directorial venture The Bengal Files was released in theatres last September, it was not screened in West Bengal. According to reports, the film faced an unofficial ban in the state under the government led by Mamata Banerjee. Following the BJP's decisive victory in the recent state elections and the formation of a new government, producer Abhishek Agarwal expressed hope that the film may finally be released in West Bengal.

Agarwal said that he has submitted a request to the new Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, asking him to watch the film. He added that the team is optimistic that, after viewing it, the Chief Minister may help facilitate its release and support the organization of a formal screening programme in the state.

Agarwal also alleged that the production encountered multiple obstacles during the making and release of the film. He claimed that the team was unable to shoot in West Bengal and faced difficulties securing permissions even during the research stage. According to him, several FIRs were filed against the makers, with some cases still pending. He further alleged that theatre owners declined to screen the film due to concerns that it could affect law and order, a justification he questioned, arguing that if the film truly posed such a threat, similar issues would have arisen elsewhere in the country.

After the BJP's electoral win in West Bengal in May, Agnihotri reflected on the challenges faced by the film in a social media post. He stated that the trailer launch was allegedly blocked, the team faced attacks, numerous FIRs were lodged against him, and he was unable to travel to receive an award from the governor. Despite these setbacks, he said the team continued efforts to screen the film across Bengal during the election period and was pleased they persevered. The film stars Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar and Pallavi Joshi in prominent roles.
