Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that C. P. Radhakrishnan’s journey from a modest background to the position of Vice President exemplifies the true strength of India’s democracy. He expressed hope that Radhakrishnan’s experience and guidance would contribute to the smooth functioning of the Rajya Sabha.

C. P. Radhakrishnan, elected in September as India’s 15th Vice President, also serves as the ex officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha. At the opening of the Winter Session of Parliament, Modi congratulated him and wished that under his leadership, the House would engage in meaningful debates and make key decisions. “I congratulate you and am confident that every member of this House will respect its traditions and uphold your dignity,” the Prime Minister said. This Winter Session marks Radhakrishnan’s first tenure presiding as the Upper House chairman.

Hailing from a farming family, Radhakrishnan has dedicated his life to social service, with politics being only a part of his larger mission. Modi said, “Your rise from humble beginnings to this high office truly reflects the strength of our democracy.” He added that Radhakrishnan has always remained above protocol, and his life demonstrates service, dedication, and patience.

Modi recalled two events that shaped Radhakrishnan’s character: narrowly escaping drowning as a child, which inspired his lifelong commitment to societal service, and surviving a bomb attack targeting former Deputy Prime Minister L. K. Advani’s yatra, which strengthened his resolve to serve the nation.

The Prime Minister also noted Radhakrishnan’s decision to give up non-vegetarian food during a visit to Varanasi, appreciating the gesture as the city’s MP. Modi highlighted Radhakrishnan’s leadership qualities since his student days, noting that he chose struggle over the easy path, and during the Emergency, he actively promoted democratic values and public awareness. A skilled organizer, Radhakrishnan has excelled in every responsibility entrusted to him, fostering unity among people. Modi concluded, “Today is a proud moment for the nation. Your journey inspires everyone. I once again congratulate you.”
