As Kashmir observes the first anniversary of the Pahalgam terror attack, noted human rights activist and Chairperson of the Association of Terror Victims in Kashmir (ATVK), Tasleema Akhter, said the tragedy remains more than just a memory—it is an “unhealed wound” that still affects the region.

In an interview with ANI marking the anniversary, Akhter emphasized that the incident went beyond mere violence. She remarked that Pahalgam was not only struck by bullets but also by deep-rooted hatred, highlighting how such acts damage humanity, peace, and the hopes of Kashmir’s younger generation. She stressed that the victims were not just numbers but people with families, aspirations, and identities.

The attack, which took place on April 22, 2025, in Baisaran Valley, claimed the lives of 26 civilians. Armed militants using M4 carbines and AK-47s targeted Hindu tourists, while a Christian tourist and a local Muslim pony operator were also among the victims. It is regarded as the deadliest civilian attack in India since the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Akhter strongly criticized what she described as Pakistan-backed terrorism, saying it has not only harmed Kashmir’s global reputation but also caused lasting suffering for its people. She pointed out that repeated efforts to destabilize the region follow a pattern aimed at undermining peace and development in Jammu and Kashmir. She firmly stated that Kashmir will not be held captive by fear and that justice for the victims is essential.

Having raised victims’ concerns on international platforms such as the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Akhter called for stronger global intervention. She urged the international community to take concrete action rather than just make statements and to hold Pakistan accountable for supporting terror groups. According to her, the world must recognize the truth beyond misleading narratives.

To prevent future incidents, she advocated for a comprehensive approach involving diplomatic pressure, enhanced global cooperation against terrorism, and continued internal vigilance. Referring to past events like the 2008 Mumbai attacks and recent incidents in Delhi, she noted that the threat of terrorism is ongoing and widespread. She concluded by expressing resilience, saying that while Kashmir stands for peace, it will persist in seeking justice for the victims of the Pahalgam attack and their families.
