Over 860 drunk-driving fines were issued in Delhi on New Year's Eve.

The Delhi Traffic Police issued 868 challans for drunken driving during New Year’s Eve as part of a major enforcement effort to keep roads safe amid festive celebrations, officials said on Thursday. According to police, special teams were deployed across the city — including arterial roads, popular nightlife hubs and residential areas — to identify and penalise motorists driving under the influence of alcohol. Officers conducted breathalyser tests through the night at multiple checkpoints, with teams changing locations regularly to prevent offenders from evading checks.
In addition to targeting drunk driving, traffic personnel also monitored speeding, dangerous motorcycle stunts and other risky violations that tend to spike on high-traffic celebratory nights. Officers paid close attention to busy areas such as Connaught Place, Hauz Khas and Aerocity, where crowds and vehicle movement were particularly dense.
The drive was part of a broader operation involving over 20,000 police personnel mobilised across the national capital to maintain both road safety and overall law and order during the New Year transition. CCTV surveillance and real-time coordination between control rooms helped authorities keep track of crowd movement and respond swiftly to incidents.
Police stressed that the exercise was not merely punitive but also intended to send a strong deterrent message against drunk driving, which remains a leading cause of road accidents in the city. By increasing visible enforcement on one of the busiest nights of the year, the traffic department aims to discourage such behaviour and protect both drivers and pedestrians. Officials urged motorists to plan ahead and use alternative transport options if they intend to drink, noting that safety measures will continue beyond New Year’s Eve to ensure safer roads for all residents and visitors.
