Nvidia Corp.’s plans to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI have fallen through, the Wall Street Journal reported, highlighting a potential divide between two major players in the AI industry. Talks reportedly stalled after internal concerns at Nvidia, according to sources familiar with the discussions. OpenAI develops the popular ChatGPT, while Nvidia leads the AI processor market that powers such technologies.

The companies had announced a letter of intent for the deal in September, aiming to fund new data centers and AI infrastructure using Nvidia components, targeting 10 gigawatts of computing power—roughly equal to New York City’s peak electricity demand. Nvidia said it has been OpenAI’s preferred partner for the past decade and looks forward to continuing collaboration, without commenting on the negotiations. OpenAI did not respond to requests for comment.

The Journal reported that both companies are now reconsidering the partnership. Nvidia might still invest tens of billions as part of OpenAI’s ongoing funding round, which could reach $100 billion. Amazon is also in talks to contribute up to $50 billion and expand its existing agreement to supply computing power to OpenAI.

Nvidia has recently made other major AI investments, including an additional $2 billion in CoreWeave Inc., a cloud computing provider and customer. Such circular deals—where a company invests in a business that purchases its products—have raised concerns about the AI sector’s sustainability, though CEO Jensen Huang dismissed the criticism, calling it “ridiculous” and noting these investments are a small fraction of what companies need to raise.
