Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that a future US president could adopt a less friendly approach towards Israel, highlighting the need for his country to strengthen international partnerships, particularly with India. His remarks underline growing concerns about the long-term stability of Israel’s relationship with Washington and the importance of building stronger diplomatic ties with other influential nations.

Speaking while presenting his security doctrine ahead of Israel’s October 27 general election, Netanyahu stressed that Israel must prepare for possible changes in American foreign policy. Although he has maintained a close relationship with US President Donald Trump, the Israeli leader indicated that future administrations may not share the same approach towards Israel. He emphasised the importance of using the current period to strengthen cooperation with Washington while developing additional partnerships to protect Israel’s long-term interests.

India featured prominently in Netanyahu’s vision for expanding Israel’s international relationships. The two countries have developed substantial cooperation in defence, technology, agriculture, water management and innovation. Their growing engagement has created opportunities for collaboration in security and economic development, while diplomatic ties have strengthened their broader strategic relationship. For Israel, closer cooperation with India could help expand its global influence, while New Delhi could benefit from Israeli expertise in advanced technologies and specialised security systems.

Netanyahu also pointed to opportunities for improving relations with countries in Latin America, including Brazil. The outreach reflects an effort to broaden Israel’s diplomatic network and reduce its dependence on a limited number of international partners. By strengthening relationships across different regions, Israel could create additional opportunities for trade, technological cooperation and diplomatic engagement as global political conditions change.

The Israeli prime minister’s comments come against the background of previous disagreements between Israel and Democratic administrations in the United States. Relations during the presidencies of Barack Obama and Joe Biden experienced tensions over aspects of Israeli policy and regional security. Netanyahu’s strong relationship with Trump has provided a different political dynamic, but his warning suggests that Israel must consider how a change in American leadership could affect its diplomatic and security priorities.

His proposed approach has also drawn criticism from political opponents. Gadi Eisenkot, a former chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces and a leading challenger in the upcoming election, questioned whether Netanyahu’s security presentation offered sufficiently detailed solutions to the challenges confronting the country. The criticism reflects a wider domestic debate over Israel’s security priorities, diplomatic strategy and preparedness for future regional developments.

Stronger relations with India could offer practical benefits for both countries. Cooperation in defence production, agricultural technology, water conservation and scientific research could provide new avenues for development. Israeli expertise in irrigation and efficient water use may support India’s agricultural objectives, while India’s expanding economy and technology sector could create opportunities for Israeli businesses and investors. Nevertheless, the future of the partnership will depend on specific agreements and the ability of both governments to align their respective national interests.

Netanyahu’s warning highlights the uncertainty that can accompany international relationships when political leadership changes. While the United States remains a crucial partner for Israel, the Israeli government appears keen to expand its diplomatic options and strengthen ties with influential countries such as India. Whether this strategy delivers lasting benefits will depend on the depth of these partnerships and how effectively Israel manages its security and diplomatic challenges in an evolving international environment.
