Kuki groups caution MLAs against taking part in Manipur government formation, announce shutdown.

Several Kuki organisations in Manipur have cautioned MLAs from their community against joining the state government, announcing a total shutdown in Churachandpur and protests in multiple areas. This comes after BJP MLA Yumnam Khemchand Singh was sworn in as Manipur’s 13th chief minister on Wednesday, nearly a year after N Biren Singh’s resignation amid prolonged ethnic violence that led to President’s Rule.
BJP MLA Nemcha Kipgen, who belongs to the Kuki community, and Naga People’s Front legislator L Dikho were appointed deputy chief ministers. The Kuki Zo Council stated that any community legislator defying its collective stand would be acting in a personal capacity, and the organisation would not be responsible for the consequences of such unilateral actions. Some Kuki militant groups also issued stern warnings to Kuki MLAs against participating in government formation.
Following Kipgen's swearing-in, protesters in the Kuki-majority Kangpokpi district blocked roads near Leimakhong by burning tyres and placing bamboo poles. Manipur has been gripped by ethnic unrest since May 3, 2023, triggered by a tribal solidarity march opposing the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status. The violence has so far claimed at least 260 lives, including civilians from both communities and security personnel, and displaced thousands.
