In a major political shift in the UK, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation amid growing pressure from within the Labour Party. In his statement, Starmer said there had been increasing doubts inside the party about his leadership and whether he was the right person to lead Labour into the next general election. He noted that he had heard those concerns from colleagues and accepted their view. He added that every decision he made was guided by what he believed was best for the country. Starmer also confirmed he had informed the King of his decision and would request the Labour National Executive Committee to begin the process of selecting a new leader before the next parliamentary session in September. He pledged full support to his successor and expressed confidence that they would inherit a stronger Britain and help Labour secure a second term. He also thanked his colleagues for their support.

An emotional Starmer also paid tribute to his family, especially his wife Victoria, calling her a constant support through difficult and good times. He said he would now focus more on his role as a husband and father, describing his children as his greatest pride. He further requested the Labour NEC to set a timeline for a leadership contest, with nominations expected to open on 9 July and close before the summer recess on 16 July, ensuring a new leader is chosen by the time Parliament reconvenes in September.

Pressure on Starmer had been building in recent months, intensifying after Labour rival Andy Burnham’s rise in Parliament, which positioned him as a potential leadership contender. His authority was also weakened by poor local election results and controversy surrounding the appointment of Peter Mandelson as UK envoy to the United States.

After consultations with cabinet members, advisers, donors, and union leaders, Starmer reportedly concluded that his position had become unsustainable. Just two years after Labour’s landslide victory brought them to power, the UK now faces a period of political uncertainty, marking what would be the sixth prime ministerial change in seven years.
