James Gunn will begin shooting the new Superman film in April 2026.

James Gunn is officially moving forward with the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, with cameras set to roll in April 2026. The writer-director, who also heads DC Studios, confirmed that the script is nearly complete, calling it “done for the most part” during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show. Gunn explained that the sequel will not just highlight Superman, played by David Corenswet, but will also bring Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor to the forefront. The story, he teased, will see Superman and Luthor reluctantly working together against a far greater danger. “It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie,” Gunn said, adding that he personally identifies with the complexity of the character.
The highly anticipated film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2027. Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed Gunn’s return to write and direct after the massive success of the 2025 Superman reboot, which grossed over $611 million worldwide, making it the year’s highest-grossing superhero release.
The DCU’s release calendar remains tightly packed. Before Man of Tomorrow, audiences will see Supergirl in 2026, directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock. That same year will also feature Clayface, a body-horror spin on the classic villain directed by James Watkins with a script from Mike Flanagan. Following Man of Tomorrow, Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II is expected to arrive in October 2027. Superman has been a cinematic staple since Christopher Reeve’s iconic debut in the 1978 classic, which spawned three sequels and inspired decades of adaptations across film and television. With Gunn at the helm, Man of Tomorrow is set to usher in a bold new chapter for the Man of Steel and the DC Universe.
