External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is set to make a statement in the Lok Sabha on Monday regarding the situation in West Asia as the second phase of Parliament’s Budget Session resumes. His statement comes amid heightened global focus on the escalating conflict in the region following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint strikes carried out by the United States and Israel on February 28. In response, Iran launched retaliatory attacks on American military bases across several West Asian countries and targeted Israeli assets in the region.

While Jaishankar is expected to address the House, Opposition members have demanded a detailed discussion on the issue. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticised the government’s decision to limit the matter to a statement and called for an opportunity for MPs to ask questions. According to the List of Business, Congress MPs are also expected to introduce a resolution seeking a No Confidence Motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The motion, reportedly signed by 118 Opposition MPs, accuses the Speaker of partisan conduct after Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi was allegedly denied a chance to speak in the House. The resolution will be moved only if the House grants permission.

The Lok Sabha will begin the resumed session with obituary references for Meghalaya MP Ricky Andrew J Syngkon, a sitting member of the House who recently passed away. Tributes will also be paid to Kumari Sushila Tririya, Devi Bux Singh, Purnmasi Ram, and KP Unnikrishnan. In the Rajya Sabha, proceedings will also begin with obituary references for Mukul Roy, Janardhan Waghmare, and HK Dua. Union Minister Nityanand Rai is scheduled to table a copy of the President’s proclamation issued under Article 356(2) of the Constitution on February 4, which revoked the earlier proclamation imposing President’s Rule in Manipur from February 13, 2025.

The Upper House is also expected to hold a discussion on the functioning of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The second phase of the Budget Session will continue until April 2 and is expected to focus on key legislative matters as well as discussions on the Union Budget 2026–27. The session originally began on January 28 with the President’s address to a joint sitting of both Houses and will consist of 30 sittings spread across 65 days.
