Iranian officials on Saturday threatened a “crushing response” following a large-scale joint military operation carried out by Israel and the United States, according to Tasnim News Agency. The coordinated strike, reportedly named Operation Roaring Lion, targeted Iranian military bases, missile manufacturing facilities, and locations near the office of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to The Times of Israel, the operation’s name was selected by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, replacing an earlier internal designation used by the Israel Defense Forces.

Explosions were reported across southern Tehran, with several ministries allegedly hit. Residents described hearing powerful blasts after what was characterized as a pre-emptive Israeli strike on multiple sites, including areas in the capital. The escalation has intensified concerns about a broader regional conflict. Israel declared a nationwide state of emergency, relocated hospital operations underground, and activated air-raid sirens. Meanwhile, Iran, Israel, and Iraq shut down their airspace, suspending all flights.

The strikes come amid strained diplomacy, as ongoing nuclear negotiations between the United States and Iran in Oman have reportedly been disrupted. The Jerusalem Post cited a security source confirming U.S. involvement in the operation. It also reported that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been moved from Tehran to a secure location, according to an Iranian official who spoke to Reuters.

The Israeli Defense Forces announced immediate changes to Home Front Command guidelines, shifting the country from full activity to essential operations only. This includes banning educational activities, public gatherings, and most workplace functions except critical sectors. Israeli Defence Minister Katz declared a nationwide special state of emergency under Israel’s Civil Defense Law, warning that missile and drone attacks against Israeli territory could occur imminently. Iranian media reported disruptions to mobile phone networks in parts of eastern and western Tehran, along with weakened internet connectivity.

U.S. President Donald Trump described Iran as “very difficult” and “very dangerous,” stating that Washington faces a major decision regarding its next steps in nuclear talks, while expressing a preference for a peaceful resolution despite rising tensions. The third round of negotiations between the two countries was held in Geneva on Thursday, with further discussions scheduled. Speaking at an event in Texas, Trump said the United States faces a significant choice in its dealings with Iran and stressed that any agreement must be meaningful.
