Iran FM Araghchi Arrives in US for UNGA as Pezeshkian Heads to New York

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has arrived in New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, marking his first visit to the United States since the outbreak of the US-Iran war. Araghchi arrived in New York on September 21 ahead of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is also scheduled to travel to the United States for the annual UN gathering. Pezeshkian is expected to address the UN General Assembly on September 23, with the Iranian delegation using the high-level meeting to present Tehran's position on the conflict and wider regional developments.

Araghchi is expected to hold diplomatic meetings with foreign officials during his stay in New York. His visit comes at a time when relations between Washington and Tehran remain highly strained and the broader Middle East continues to face significant security challenges. The United States has allowed Iran's core delegation to enter the country for the UN General Assembly despite the ongoing conflict. However, Washington has imposed restrictions on the Iranian delegation, including limits on movement within the New York area. Some members of Iran's wider delegation have also reportedly not received permission to enter the United States.

Pezeshkian's visit is expected to include meetings with foreign leaders and other officials in addition to his address to the General Assembly. His appearance at the United Nations will give Tehran an opportunity to communicate its position directly to representatives from countries around the world. Araghchi's arrival before the Iranian president also provides Tehran with an opportunity to conduct diplomatic consultations ahead of Pezeshkian's speech. Discussions on the sidelines of the UN meeting could focus on the ongoing conflict, regional security and other international issues involving Iran.
