Indian Student Varun Batchigari Arrested in Germany After Girlfriend's Death in US

An Indian student accused of killing his 19-year-old girlfriend in Tucson, Arizona, has been arrested in Germany after allegedly fleeing the United States, according to authorities. Varun Batchigari, 20, has been identified as the suspect in the death of Julissa Rubi Salazar. Tucson police have obtained an arrest warrant charging him with first-degree murder and kidnapping. He is currently in Germany and is expected to face extradition proceedings before being returned to Arizona.

The case came to light on August 6, when Salazar’s family requested a welfare check at her apartment in Tucson. Emergency personnel who arrived at the property found the teenager unresponsive. Police were subsequently called to the scene after signs of trauma were observed, and investigators began treating the death as a homicide.

As detectives worked to establish what had happened, Batchigari emerged as a suspect. According to authorities, he left Tucson around the time Salazar was found dead and travelled to Tucson International Airport. Investigators later learned that he had boarded a flight bound for Germany and was believed to be planning to travel onward to India.

US authorities alerted their international counterparts, leading German authorities to locate and detain Batchigari after he arrived in the country. His arrest reportedly prevented him from continuing his journey to India. The investigation involved cooperation between Tucson police, the FBI and other US and German law enforcement agencies.

Batchigari had been associated with the University of Arizona and was reportedly studying business analytics. US media reports citing federal and investigative sources have also referred to previous disciplinary and behavioural issues involving him. However, allegations concerning his past should not be treated as established criminal findings unless proven through legal proceedings.

Investigators are also examining the relationship between Batchigari and Salazar. Reports citing investigative documents say Salazar had been considering ending the relationship. Authorities are looking into accounts of previous disputes and alleged incidents involving the couple as part of the investigation into her death. Police are also examining allegations that Salazar’s phone and credit cards were taken following the incident. Investigators reportedly believe messages were later sent from her phone to her mother, details that have become part of the evidence being reviewed by authorities.

The arrest in Germany has now shifted the case into an international extradition process. Once Batchigari is returned to Arizona, he is expected to face the murder and kidnapping charges filed against him. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to examine forensic evidence, communications, travel records and witness statements. The allegations against Batchigari have not been proven in court, and he remains legally presumed innocent unless and until he is convicted.
