Indian Envoy Meets Bangladesh PM Amid Fresh Row Over Sheikh Hasina Event

India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi met Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Dhaka amid fresh diplomatic tensions between the two countries over former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s recent media appearance from India. The meeting comes at a sensitive time for India-Bangladesh relations, with Dhaka objecting to Hasina being allowed to address a media event while staying in India. The former Bangladeshi premier has been living in India since leaving Bangladesh in August 2024 following the political upheaval that ended her government.

Bangladesh has repeatedly raised the issue of Hasina’s presence in India and has sought her extradition. Her public statements from India have added another layer to the already delicate relationship between New Delhi and Dhaka. India, however, has maintained that the recent media programme involving Hasina was organised by a private organisation and that the Indian government had no involvement in the event. New Delhi has also continued to emphasise the importance of maintaining dialogue with Bangladesh despite differences over political and diplomatic issues.

Trivedi’s meeting with Tarique Rahman is part of India’s efforts to maintain high-level engagement with the new Bangladeshi leadership. Before meeting the prime minister, the Indian envoy also held discussions with Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman. The Indian diplomat has recently spoken about the importance of direct engagement between the two countries, expressing confidence that outstanding issues can be addressed through dialogue. His comments come as both sides attempt to manage disagreements while keeping broader bilateral cooperation on track.

The relationship between India and Bangladesh extends beyond the current political dispute. The two neighbours have significant interests in trade, border management, connectivity, energy, security and regional cooperation. Any prolonged diplomatic confrontation could therefore have wider implications for both countries.

Tarique Rahman's possible visit to India is also being closely watched. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited the Bangladeshi leader to attend the upcoming BRICS summit in New Delhi. Such a visit could provide an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss bilateral concerns and explore ways to improve relations.

The meeting between Trivedi and Rahman indicates that diplomatic communication between New Delhi and Dhaka remains active despite the latest disagreement over Sheikh Hasina’s public appearance. How both governments handle the issue in the coming weeks is likely to be important for the future direction of India-Bangladesh relations.
