The Indian Army has recently secured a significant contract worth ₹659.47 crore to equip its 7.62x51mm SIG 716 assault rifles with advanced night sights, provided by Kanpur-based MKU Ltd in partnership with Medbit Technologies Pvt Ltd. This move marks an important leap in enhancing the Army’s infantry capabilities for low-light and night-time operations, proving critical to modern battlefield scenarios characterized by round-the-clock threats.

The newly procured Image Intensifier-based Night Sight devices enable soldiers to maximize the effective range of their SIG 716 rifles up to 500 meters, even in near-total darkness or under starlight. This is a marked improvement over the older Passive Night Sights currently in use, offering soldiers superior target identification, situational awareness, and engagement precision during night missions, which are often decisive in modern combat.

What makes this deal particularly noteworthy is its alignment with India’s Atmanirbharta initiative. Over 51% of the Night Sight devices’ content is indigenous, bolstering the domestic defence industry and creating opportunities for MSMEs in component manufacturing and raw material supply. This initiative not only strengthens India’s tactical edge but also promotes self-reliance in critical defence technology sectors.

The contract package also includes essential accessories such as lens covers, eye guards, cleaning kits, rechargeable battery packs, and multiple batteries to ensure sustainability in prolonged operations. The devices are expected to have a service life upwards of 10,000 operational hours or 10 years, accompanied by comprehensive training and maintenance support from the suppliers, ensuring long-term usability and reliability.

This procurement reflects the Indian Army’s ongoing modernization efforts to maintain tactical superiority and operational readiness. In complex terrains and strategic border areas where night operations are frequent, these advanced night sights will significantly enhance infantry effectiveness, reduce risks, and strengthen overall combat capabilities—making a vital difference in future engagements.
