The Indian Army has established new drone-centric combat units, signaling a major shift in its operational strategy. These formations are built to embed unmanned systems directly into frontline roles, strengthening both offensive and defensive capabilities across varied terrains and combat situations.

The “Ashni” platoons concentrate on intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance tasks, while also being capable of executing loitering strikes. By merging continuous aerial observation with precision attack functions, they give commanders real-time battlefield awareness and the means to respond rapidly to threats. This dual capability ensures drones move beyond passive monitoring to actively influencing combat outcomes.

The “Divyastra” batteries enhance artillery performance through UAV-enabled targeting. Using drones to detect, track, and mark targets, these units achieve far greater accuracy compared to traditional techniques. This integration shortens response times, increases strike precision, and reduces unintended damage, making artillery operations more effective in both conventional and irregular warfare scenarios.

The “Shaktibaan” regiments specialize in swarm drone tactics and long-range strike missions. Coordinated drone swarms can overwhelm enemy defenses, disrupt radar systems, and deliver concentrated attacks over extended distances. Their ability to strike deep into hostile territory without risking manned assets significantly expands operational reach and strengthens deterrence.

These units represent a fundamental transformation in warfare, where drones are central to combat rather than supporting tools. They highlight India’s focus on self-reliance, technological advancement, and flexible force design to address evolving threats.
