India and China reiterated their resolve to uphold peace and tranquility along their shared border, citing considerable progress since the disengagement accords reached last year, according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday. The two sides met at the 23rd round of the Corps Commander-level talks at the Chushul-Moldo border point on Saturday, marking the first meeting under the General Level Mechanism in the Western Sector since the 24th round of Special Representatives’ discussions held in August. The MEA said the meeting “was conducted in a friendly and cordial atmosphere.”

They reviewed developments since the 22nd Corps Commander meeting in October 2024 and noted that peace and stability had broadly been maintained in the border areas. Both delegations pledged to continue employing existing mechanisms to manage any on-the-ground issues and ensure ongoing stability.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of National Defence of the People’s Republic of China also issued a statement, noting that both militaries engaged in “active and in-depth communication” on the western portion of the China-India frontier and discussed ways to reduce tensions in sensitive zones. The Chinese statement added that the talks were held under the guidance of the “important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries,” and the parties agreed to persist with military and diplomatic dialogue to jointly safeguard peace and tranquility along the frontier.

In August, India and China concluded the 24th round of Special Representatives’ dialogue on the Boundary Question, where they agreed to a number of steps to strengthen bilateral ties. Among these was the formation of a Working Group under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India‑China Border Affairs (WMCC) to bolster border management and progress de-escalation via both military and diplomatic channels.
