India Calls on Pakistan to End Human Rights Abuses in Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir at UN Security Council

India has strongly urged Pakistan to halt ongoing human rights abuses in the territories it illegally occupies, with particular emphasis on Jammu and Kashmir, during a recent session at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, delivered a firm message, calling Pakistan to immediately stop the grave violations taking place in these regions. He highlighted not only the repression and military occupation faced by the local population but also Pakistan’s exploitation of resources and denial of fundamental freedoms to the people living there.
In his address on the occasion of the 80th UN Day, Ambassador Harish reaffirmed that Jammu and Kashmir has always been and will remain an integral part of India. He contrasted India’s democratic traditions, where the people enjoy constitutional rights, with Pakistan’s governance in the occupied territories, where concepts like fundamental rights are largely absent. The population in these regions is described as being in open revolt against Pakistan’s military presence, underscoring widespread dissent against the ongoing repression and brutality.
India’s call came amid heightened scrutiny of Pakistan’s human rights record, reinforcing New Delhi’s stance that illegal occupation and human rights abuses must end for peace and stability to return to the region. The ambassador’s statement also urged the international community to recommit to the foundational principles of the UN Charter, emphasizing the need for multilateral cooperation to address contemporary global challenges, including those in conflict zones such as Kashmir.
The statement added that India stands firmly for justice, dignity, equality, and prosperity for all peoples and expressed a broader vision of global solidarity through the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—seeing the world as one family. By calling out Pakistan’s actions at the UNSC, India reiterated its long-term commitment to upholding international law and safeguarding the rights and sovereignty of its territories.
This diplomatic intervention at the UNSC is part of India’s continued efforts to highlight the Kashmir issue on the global stage, pressing for an end to human rights abuses while showcasing its own democratic practices in the region. As tensions remain high, the international community is increasingly aware that sustainable peace in South Asia hinges on respect for human rights and territorial sovereignty, coupled with genuine dialogue and cooperation. India’s appeal to the UN Security Council serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in Jammu and Kashmir and the importance of upholding human rights as a foundation for peace and development in the region
