Google is set to introduce its Gemini AI assistant to children under 13, supervised through the Family Link system, according to a report by 9To5Google. An email to parents revealed that kids will soon be able to access Gemini on Android, iOS, and the web, with the option to make it their default assistant on Android devices.

Promoted as a tool for schoolwork, answering questions, and story creation, Gemini comes with clear cautions. Google emphasized that the AI can make errors and encouraged parents to help children think critically about its responses. The email reminded families that Gemini "isn't human" and lacks emotions or independent thought, urging kids not to share personal information and to double-check the information it provides.

While parental controls for Google Assistant still apply on home devices, they don’t cover Gemini entirely. However, parents can manage or turn off Gemini access using the Family Link app or site, where it will now appear in the Controls section alongside services like YouTube and Search. Google will notify parents when a child first uses Gemini.

Additionally, Google plans to expand Gemini to more platforms in 2025, including Wear OS, Android Auto, and other connected devices. CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed during the Q1 earnings call that Gemini will replace Google Assistant on mobile and other devices like tablets, headphones, and smartwatches later this year.
