A ferry carrying 65 people sank near Indonesia’s Bali island, leaving four dead and 30 still missing, the country’s Search and Rescue Agency reported on Thursday (July 3). Thirty-one individuals were rescued as teams continued efforts to locate the missing amid rough sea conditions. The ferry, KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, went down roughly 30 minutes after departing from Banyuwangi port in East Java on its way to Bali late Wednesday, according to the agency. Onboard were 53 passengers, 12 crew members, and 22 vehicles.

Search operations are ongoing but are being hindered by strong winds and currents. A helicopter and 13 underwater rescue divers have been deployed to assist. Footage from Basarnas, the national rescue agency, showed what seemed to be a body being brought ashore from a fishing boat in calmer waters.

There has been no official word on the passengers’ nationalities, but a manifest aired by MetroTV suggested there were no foreign nationals aboard. Ferries are widely used across Indonesia, an archipelago of over 17,000 islands, but safety regulations are often poorly enforced, leading to frequent accidents. In 2023, a smaller ferry capsized near Sulawesi island, claiming at least 15 lives.
