Finland Prime Minister Alexander Stubb has suggested that India could help de-escalate the ongoing Iran–US conflict, which has disrupted global energy markets and pushed oil prices higher. In an interview with Bloomberg Television on Monday, Stubb called for a ceasefire involving Iran, the US and Israel, and said that either European countries or India might assist in mediation.

He pointed to India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who had earlier urged a ceasefire and negotiations to calm tensions and stabilize the situation. Stubb also noted that the initial military operation was not discussed with allies but said US President Donald Trump is likely consulting key partners such as the UK, France and Germany.

Stubb made the remarks shortly after returning from a state visit to India, as tensions between Iran and the US have spread across the Gulf region. Concerns have grown over the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route that carries about one fifth of the world’s oil and is vital for many countries, including India.

He referred to Jaishankar’s recent discussions with Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, after which some Indian flagged ships were allowed to pass through the strategic waterway. Jaishankar later said Iran did not receive anything in return for allowing the passage and stressed that India and Iran have long maintained diplomatic relations, while describing the conflict as unfortunate.

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright also hinted that India could help maintain security in the Strait of Hormuz. The US has urged allies to send warships to ensure the passage remains open. Wright noted that many Asian countries, including India, rely heavily on oil supplies that pass through the strait. Despite the tensions and several ships being stranded in the area, Iran has said that the strait is closed only to US and Israeli vessels.
