Elon Musk, the head of xAI, has launched Grokipedia, an AI-driven encyclopedia that aims to compete directly with Wikipedia. Announcing the release on X, he claimed that the current version, Grokipedia 0.1, is already superior to Wikipedia, and added that the upcoming Version 1.0 will be drastically improved. Musk has previously accused Wikipedia of promoting certain political viewpoints, which he says inspired him to build an alternative platform focused on delivering “the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”

A Forbes report states that Grokipedia debuted with about 885,000 articles — far fewer than the approximately seven million available on Wikipedia. Instead of relying on human editors, Grokipedia’s content is fully produced and “fact-checked” by xAI’s Grok model. At the moment, users cannot edit any pages directly, though Musk has suggested that in the future, people will be able to request Grok to add, change, or delete content, and the system will either carry out the request or explain why it cannot.

Many entries in this early version appear to be adapted from Wikipedia and include notices acknowledging the Creative Commons license. Forbes even observed that some articles are nearly identical to their Wikipedia versions, but Musk has promised that this will be corrected before the end of the year. While Wikipedia is a long-established platform supported by global volunteer contributions, offering millions of articles in various languages and continuously updated, Grokipedia remains in its initial phase with a more limited library and tightly controlled editing features.
