Droupadi Murmu has nominated Harivansh Narayan Singh as a Member of the Rajya Sabha, as per a Gazette notification released on Friday. His appointment was approved a day earlier, after his previous term as a JD(U) representative from Bihar ended on April 9. He has held the position of Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha since 2018. The 69-year-old leader has been nominated under the relevant provisions of the Constitution of India to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of nominated member Ranjan Gogoi.

Harivansh has extensive parliamentary experience, having served on several key committees of the Upper House, including the Committee on Agriculture, Business Advisory Committee, Committee on Rules, and General Purposes Committee. He has also chaired significant panels such as the Committee on Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme and the Committee of Privileges.

His contributions also include involvement in policy and legislative platforms like the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction. He has been part of multiple Select and Joint Committees, including those examining the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill and the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, where he played an important role in legislative review.

He has served on consultative bodies such as the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s Consultative Committee and chaired the Content Advisory Committee of Rajya Sabha Television. His parliamentary career began with his election to the Rajya Sabha in 2014, followed by re-election in 2020. He also presided over proceedings as Deputy Chairman during the last Budget Session, temporarily performing duties of the Chairman. Following the end of his term on April 9, a fresh nomination has now been made to fill the vacant seat.
