Director Rob Reiner of When Harry Met Sally.. reminisces about filming an uncomfortable scene while his mother was present.

Filmmaker Rob Reiner — known for directing classics such as the romantic comedy The Sure Thing, the coming-of-age drama Stand by Me, the fantasy adventure The Princess Bride, and the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally... — recently reflected on an awkward moment involving his mother during the making of his 1989 hit, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Reiner’s mother, Estelle Reiner, famously delivered one of the film’s most iconic lines. When Harry Met Sally..., written by Nora Ephron and starring Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan, Carrie Fisher, and Bruno Kirby, features a memorable scene where Crystal and Ryan’s characters, Harry and Sally, share lunch in a crowded deli. Sally attempts to convince a skeptical Harry that at least one of his former partners has likely faked an orgasm. She then performs a loud mock-orgasm to prove her point, drawing stares from fellow diners. The scene ends with Estelle Reiner’s legendary line: “I’ll have what she’s having.”
Reiner told CBS’ 60 Minutes that directing that moment became especially uncomfortable. “The first couple of times, she didn’t do it full out,” he recalled. “Finally, I sat across from Billy [Crystal] and acted it out for her — pounding the table, shouting ‘Yes! Yes! Yes!’ — and then realized I was basically simulating an orgasm in front of my mother.”
Reiner also revealed that he had originally planned a different ending for the film but decided on a happy one after meeting his now-wife, Michele, who also produces his projects, including the newly released Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. Reiner, who reprises his role as the mockumentary’s director, admitted feeling the pressure of following up a beloved cult classic. “Are we crazy to do another one? The bar is just way too high,” he said, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.
