Diljit Dosanjh Appeals to Authorities to Listen to Students Amid NEET Protests, Says 'People's Voice Is God's Voice'

Singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh has expressed solidarity with students protesting over the NEET-UG 2026 controversy, condemning the police action during the July 20 CJP demonstration and appealing to authorities to address their concerns. In a social media post, Diljit said the treatment of students during the protest was unacceptable and urged officials to engage with them and listen to their demands. He wrote, “What happened today was very bad. Students should not have been treated this way. I request the authorities to listen to the students’ demands. The voice of the people is the voice of God.”

The singer also spoke about facing criticism in the past, saying he had been repeatedly labelled an “anti-national” for expressing his views. Referring to his support for the farmers’ protest, he claimed he had faced backlash and legal challenges that he could not publicly discuss. Diljit added that he expected similar criticism this time as well but said that “God sees everything” and hoped for a positive outcome.

His comments came as protests by the CJP intensified over allegations of irregularities and a paper leak in the NEET-UG 2026 examination. Demonstrators have been demanding accountability and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The issue has also triggered reactions from several opposition leaders, who criticised the government over the police response during the students’ march towards Parliament.

Several members of the entertainment industry also voiced their concerns. Actor Rohit Saraf described the situation as painful but said the courage shown by students would be remembered. He expressed hope that the incident would not only be viewed through the lens of violence but also as a moment highlighting young people’s determination. Veteran actor Shabana Azmi visited the protest site at Jantar Mantar and extended support to students and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was on a hunger strike. She shared a poem by her father, renowned poet Kaifi Azmi, highlighting themes of resistance and resilience.

Actors Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D'Souza also issued a joint statement, calling young protesters an important part of democracy. Meanwhile, actor Aditi Rao Hydari stressed that humanity should come before political differences and urged authorities to ensure a respectful environment where students’ voices could be heard.

However, some political figures called for dialogue rather than street protests. Actor and BJP MP Hema Malini said that disagreements should be resolved through discussions and argued that protests were not the right way to address grievances. BJP MP Kangana Ranaut also criticised the demonstrations, saying Parliament is the appropriate platform to raise concerns and hold the government accountable. She argued that protesters should not pressure the government into making decisions through agitation.

Sonam Wangchuk continues to remain under medical observation at Safdarjung Hospital. Doctors said his condition is stable, though his blood sugar levels remain low and his potassium level was recorded at 3.2 mEq/L. He is receiving oral rehydration and potassium supplements but has declined intravenous fluids and glucose despite medical advice. Wangchuk was taken to the hospital by Delhi Police on July 18 after beginning a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, where he was demanding action over the alleged NEET paper leak issue and seeking the resignation of the Education Minister.
