In the wake of a tragic explosion near Delhi’s historic Red Fort that claimed 15 lives, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Vinai Kumar Saxena, has called for significantly increased vigilance and instructed authorities to implement strict preventive protocols to safeguard the city and its residents. Following the incident on November 10, the LG has directed the Police Commissioner and Chief Secretary to enforce a broad set of precautionary actions. These include maintaining digital records of ammonium nitrate transactions exceeding specific thresholds, a substance linked to explosives, to monitor and control its unauthorized trade. Additionally, the LG has mandated rigorous security audits of crowded markets and transport hubs like bus terminals to identify vulnerabilities, enhance CCTV coverage, and reinforce security personnel deployment.

One notable step involves collaboration with social media giants such as Meta and X (formerly Twitter) to establish advanced monitoring systems aimed at tracking and curbing radicalized online content that could incite violence or brainwash vulnerable communities. The administration also aims to strengthen human and technical intelligence operations focused on areas prone to radicalization, alongside boosting community outreach programs for preventive policing.

These efforts come as the investigation into the blast continues, revealing the involvement of a suicide bomber and ongoing probes into a potentially larger conspiracy. The LG further ordered the creation of a centralized database documenting medical professionals, especially in private hospitals, for background verification to prevent any misuse of medical credentials.

Increased street-level vigilance is already evident, with police urging citizens to stay alert, verify identities of tenants, note down vehicle numbers, and avoid accepting food or packages from unknown sources. Public advisories and announcements have become routine across crowded places including markets, railway stations, and heritage sites to sustain awareness and vigilance.

The Red Fort, which is soon to host a major event commemorating the 350th death anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, has seen a significant boost in security infrastructure. Over 250 CCTV cameras have been installed around the monument, complemented by a multi-layered security grid involving several agencies, reassuring visitors while demonstrating the administration’s resolve to prevent any recurrence.

The call from Delhi’s top official underscores the heightened security environment and a proactive approach in ensuring public safety. By leveraging technology, tighter controls on hazardous materials, intelligence enhancements, and community cooperation, Delhi aims to fortify itself against threats, preserving its legacy and protecting its citizens.
