Craig Gillespie hints that Supergirl is 'essentially an anti-hero narrative.'

Director Craig Gillespie has hinted that Supergirl is “essentially an anti-hero story.” The upcoming DC Universe (DCU) blockbuster will feature Milly Alcock as the Woman of Tomorrow, following her own adventure after a cameo in 2025’s Superman. Gillespie explained that the film will track Supergirl as she confronts “a lot of demons,” adding: “She’s carrying a lot of baggage, which sets her apart from where Superman is in his life.” DCU co-CEO James Gunn also emphasized that Supergirl is far from perfect. He said, “So many female superheroes are portrayed as flawless. She’s not—unlike male superheroes, who have long been allowed complexity and flaws.”
The first trailer presents a battered, weary Kara Zor-El (Alcock) drifting through space, haunted by Krypton’s destruction and attempting to numb her pain on her 23rd birthday. Her path crosses with the vengeful Ruthye (Eve Ridley), leading to glimpses of lost worlds, brutal battles, and a tease of Lobo (Jason Momoa), setting up a cosmic story of revenge with a sharper, darker edge. The film also stars Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Emily Beecham as Alura, and David Krumholtz as Zor-El.
Scheduled for a June 2026 release, Supergirl is adapted from Tom King’s 2022 comic run, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The official synopsis reads: “When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely ally on an epic interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.”
Meanwhile, James Gunn is developing the follow-up to Superman, titled Man of Tomorrow, which will bring back David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Although it follows the events of Superman, Gunn has stated it will not be a direct sequel, describing it as a story where Superman and Lex must reluctantly unite against a much larger threat. Gunn also called it “as much a Lex movie as a Superman movie.”
Man of Tomorrow is set to begin production in April 2026 for a July 2027 release. Gunn explained that while he is focusing on completing the Superman sequel, he has long envisioned Man of Tomorrow. Regarding the broader DCU, he revealed plans to tell “one big story” across his superhero films, though each movie will remain watchable on its own. He elaborated: “There’s a larger narrative involving Salvation, Rick Flag, Lex, and Superman. That’s the plan, at least. I might get exhausted before finishing, but right now, there’s a clear path forward for a few more films.”
