Congress MP Manish Tewari seeks debate on India-US trade deal during Budget Session

Congress MP Manish Tewari on Tuesday submitted an Adjournment Motion in the Lok Sabha, seeking a discussion on the proposed framework of the India–United States Interim Trade Agreement. He expressed concerns over India’s continued purchase of Russian oil and possible tariff concessions on US agricultural products.
In his notice, Tewari called for the suspension of Question Hour, Zero Hour, and other scheduled business to address what he described as serious issues arising from the India–US joint statement on the interim trade deal and a recent White House executive order. He alleged that commitments related to Russian oil imports and agriculture-linked concessions may have been made, raising concerns about India’s energy security, farmers’ interests, and strategic autonomy. He urged the government to make an immediate statement and allow a full parliamentary debate.
The move follows a joint statement in which both countries said India would reduce or eliminate tariffs on all US industrial goods and a wide range of American food and agricultural products, including dried distillers’ grains, red sorghum for animal feed, tree nuts, fresh and processed fruits, soybean oil, wine, spirits, and other items.
India’s purchase of Russian oil also came under scrutiny after the White House said in a separate statement that India had committed to stopping direct or indirect imports of Russian oil, would buy US energy products, and had agreed to a framework to expand defence cooperation with the US over the next decade.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri clarified on Monday that India’s energy decisions would continue to be guided by national interest. Speaking at a special MEA briefing, he stressed that adequate availability, fair pricing, and reliable supply remain the core drivers of India’s energy policy, amid reports suggesting a reduction in oil imports from Russia.
