Congress Challenges CJP to Audit Punjab Schools With Same Scrutiny

Congress leader Sachin Pilot has challenged the CJP to conduct an audit of government schools in Punjab with the same level of scrutiny that it has applied while examining schools in other states, escalating the political debate over the Aam Aadmi Party government's education record. Pilot's remarks came after a CJP delegation led by its co-convenor Saurav Das visited government schools in Ludhiana as part of a school audit exercise. The team inspected a School of Eminence, a senior secondary school and a primary school to assess infrastructure and other facilities available to students.

The inspection produced mixed observations. The School of Eminence impressed the delegation with facilities including sports infrastructure, computer facilities and an artificial intelligence laboratory. However, the team also highlighted shortcomings at other government schools, particularly concerns involving ageing infrastructure and basic amenities.

Pilot questioned whether the same standards were being applied consistently while assessing government schools. He argued that Punjab should not receive any special treatment because it is governed by the AAP and challenged the CJP to examine schools in the state with the same approach used elsewhere.

The Congress leader's remarks have added a political dimension to the ongoing school audit debate, with the opposition seeking greater scrutiny of the Punjab government's claims regarding improvements in public education. The AAP has responded to the criticism by turning the focus towards Congress-ruled Himachal Pradesh. AAP leader Manish Sisodia challenged Pilot to compare government schools in Punjab with those in Himachal Pradesh and said his party could showcase a large number of schools in Punjab that had undergone significant improvements.

The exchange has subsequently developed into a wider political contest over the performance of government schools under different state administrations. While AAP has highlighted improvements in school infrastructure and facilities in Punjab, Congress has questioned whether these changes are being implemented consistently across the state's education system.

During its Ludhiana visit, the CJP delegation also raised concerns about facilities at some older government schools. The observations were brought to the attention of Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains. AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal later welcomed the inspection and said that issues identified by the delegation would be addressed.

Punjab's government has placed considerable emphasis on its Schools of Eminence programme, under which selected government schools have been upgraded with improved infrastructure and modern learning facilities. The programme has become a key part of the AAP government's education narrative, while opposition parties have continued to question whether similar improvements are reaching schools across the state.

The latest confrontation between Congress and AAP also highlights the growing importance of education as a political issue in Punjab. While both parties have sought to highlight weaknesses in the other's governance record, the school audit has brought renewed attention to the need for assessments that cover a broad range of government institutions rather than focusing only on selected schools. The debate is now likely to continue as political parties seek to establish their respective records on government education. For students, parents and teachers, however, the more significant question remains whether improvements in infrastructure, facilities and learning conditions are reaching government schools across Punjab in a consistent manner.
