Commerce Minister Goyal welcomed US Trade Representative Greer to India and said he looks forward to productive discussions on a trade agreement.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday extended a warm welcome to US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer, who is currently visiting the Department of Commerce in New Delhi. He expressed hope for meaningful and productive discussions on the proposed bilateral trade agreement between India and the United States. Goyal also acknowledged the presence of US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and other members of the American delegation, who are participating in the ongoing negotiations. In a post on X, he said he was pleased to host Ambassador Greer, Ambassador Gor, and their team, adding that he looked forward to constructive talks aimed at strengthening trade ties between the two nations.
US Ambassador Sergio Gor also shared updates on the meeting, noting his engagement with Minister Piyush Goyal and USTR Ambassador Greer in New Delhi. He said the discussions are expected to support progress toward finalizing a trade agreement between India and the US. In another message on X, Gor welcomed Greer’s visit to India, stating that both sides are working actively toward a comprehensive trade deal that could unlock new economic opportunities and deepen bilateral economic cooperation.
According to officials, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer arrived at Vanijya Bhavan in the capital to hold discussions with Commerce Minister Goyal on an interim trade arrangement as well as the broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). He was accompanied by US Ambassador Sergio Gor and a delegation of trade officials. Gor expressed optimism ahead of Greer’s two-day visit, indicating that the meetings would help advance ongoing trade negotiations. His visit follows recent high-level diplomatic engagement, including talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France.
The current discussions are focused on a joint statement and an interim trade deal that form part of wider negotiations launched earlier in February 2025 by the two leaders. India and the United States continue to engage on tariff-related issues under Section 301 proceedings while also working toward finalizing a structured bilateral trade framework.
Officials have indicated that the interim trade agreement is in its final stages, with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri recently confirming significant progress and noting that Ambassador Greer’s visit is an important step in concluding the deal. After completing his engagements in India, Ambassador Greer is scheduled to travel to Uzbekistan for further diplomatic meetings with senior government leaders. The US Trade Representative’s office stated that these international discussions aim to promote fair, balanced, and reciprocal trade relationships with partner countries.
