Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced that all competitive exams conducted by the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) will be held in Marathi. He made this statement in the state legislative council while responding to a question raised by Shiv Sena (UBT) legislator Milind Narvekar.
Narvekar pointed out that certain MPSC exams, particularly those related to agriculture and engineering, were conducted only in English. He questioned why engineering-related exams were not available in Marathi. Addressing this concern, CM Fadnavis clarified that while most MPSC exams are held in both Marathi and English, courts had ruled in specific cases that some, especially agricultural engineering exams, should be conducted only in English. The ruling was based on the fact that textbooks for these subjects were not available in Marathi. The government had highlighted this issue in court, and the argument was accepted.
Fadnavis stated that the government is actively working on making Marathi textbooks available for technical subjects. He emphasized that despite the current lack of study materials, the new education policy permits engineering courses to be taught in Marathi. As a result, the state government has decided that MPSC exams previously restricted to English due to study material constraints will now be supported with Marathi textbooks. A structured timeline will be set with the MPSC to implement this change.
This decision is expected to significantly benefit Marathi-speaking students who face difficulties due to the language barrier while preparing for MPSC exams. The government’s initiative aims to ensure that students from regional backgrounds have equal opportunities in competitive exams and career advancements.
