Calm restored in Murshidabad after violent Waqf protest; security forces remain stationed

Authorities have confirmed that the situation in Dhuliyan town, located in the Jangipur subdivision of West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, is now stable following violent protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act on April 11. Security forces, including personnel from the BSF and CRPF, have been deployed to the area to maintain peace. Officials said the situation is currently under control.
Local residents shared harrowing accounts of the violence, which led to extensive damage to shops and property. One shopkeeper told ANI that his entire building was destroyed: “All the glass was shattered. They broke in through the back, which had wooden windows and doors. Everything was ruined, and some of our belongings were looted. The shutter of my other shop was also broken. I had Rs 13.5 lakh in cash that was supposed to be deposited at the bank—it's all gone. Furniture and equipment worth another Rs 7–8 lakh were also lost. Overall, my losses are close to Rs 20–25 lakh.”
Another shopkeeper, Adhir Ravi Das, said his shop was completely destroyed. “Everything is gone. If the administration helps, we may be able to reopen. Otherwise, there's nothing left. Goods worth Rs 6–7 lakh have been burnt. We want peace. The situation is calm now because of the BSF, but if they leave, we’re unsure what might happen. We need a BSF camp here.”
Habib-ur-Rehman, another local, noted an improvement in the atmosphere. “Things in Samserganj are back to normal. The administration is encouraging us to reopen shops and stay disciplined. After BSF and CRPF deployment, the situation has changed for the better.” Security forces continue to patrol sensitive areas, and authorities have appealed to the public to remain calm and return to regular routines.
