BJP names N Ramchander Rao as the President of its Telangana unit.

In a strategic move to bolster its ideological and organisational strength in Telangana, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed N Ramchander Rao as the new President of its Telangana unit, replacing Union Minister G Kishan Reddy. According to a party release, this leadership change reflects the BJP's renewed focus on its core principles and its efforts to reconnect with grassroots supporters in the state.
Ramchander Rao, a seasoned leader with roots in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), brings a unique blend of ideological conviction, legal expertise, and extensive political experience to his new role. The party highlighted his student activism during the turbulent 1970s and 1980s at Osmania University, where he opposed the dominance of Leftist groups and the spread of Naxalite ideology. Despite suffering a serious assault that left him hospitalised for weeks, Rao remained committed to nationalist causes on campus.
His decade-long involvement with the ABVP (1977–1985) included roles as State Committee Member and City President, even as he pursued his law and postgraduate studies. Coming from a modest Brahmin family associated with Osmania University’s academic community, Rao chose a path of activism and public service over personal comfort. Rao began practicing law in 1986 and built a distinguished legal career, eventually becoming a Senior Advocate in 2012. He has since represented clients at various judicial levels, including the Supreme Court, and continues to offer legal counsel to BJP workers and leaders.
Within the party, Rao has served in various capacities: BJYM Secretary, City Vice President, State Legal Cell Convenor, Member of the National Legal Cell, State General Secretary, and Party Spokesperson. His political skills and ability to foster consensus earned him a seat in the Telangana Legislative Council in 2015 from the graduates' constituency of Hyderabad, Rangareddy, and Mahbubnagar. The party leadership’s decision to elevate Rao has been well-received by senior BJP members and the grassroots cadre, who see him as a principled and unifying figure. Known for his humility, accessibility, and dedication, Rao is expected to guide the party through its next phase of expansion in Telangana.
The BJP stated that the appointment sends a clear message: the party values dedication and substance over public spectacle. While some critics online have labelled him a "low-profile" choice, insiders recognise his credibility and quiet influence. The Telangana BJP unit expressed its gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Party President JP Nadda for the appointment. With Ramchander Rao now at the helm, the party expressed confidence in achieving greater milestones and deepening its engagement with the people of Telangana.
