Bangladesh PM Tarique Rahman Names Khalilur Rahman as New Foreign Minister

Tarique Rahman, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has distributed ministerial responsibilities among the 50 members of his cabinet. Former national security advisor Khalilur Rahman, who served under the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus, has been appointed as Foreign Minister. Senior BNP leader Shama Obaid has been named State Minister for Foreign Affairs. The government also announced that Tarique Rahman will personally oversee the Cabinet Division, Ministry of Defense, and Armed Forces Division.
Key portfolios were assigned to senior members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will head the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives. Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has been appointed Finance and Planning Minister, while Joint Secretary General Saluddin Ahmed will serve as Home Affairs Minister.
The February 12, 2026 general election marked a turning point in Bangladesh’s political landscape. Following the 2024 uprising that removed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the BNP secured a commanding victory, winning more than 200 seats in the 300-member Jatiya Sangsad. Tarique Rahman, son of former leaders Khaleda Zia and Ziaur Rahman, returned from exile to lead the party to power, ending Hasina’s long rule.
The election also included a constitutional referendum and saw higher participation from minority candidates. According to Rohana Hettiarachchie of People's Action for Free and Fair Elections, the polls were competitive and orderly. However, the exclusion of major parties such as the Awami League and ongoing reform disputes indicate that significant political challenges remain ahead.
