Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s proposed visit to India early next week has fallen through, but the two countries are still discussing the possibility of arranging a trip later in August, according to people familiar with the matter. Rahman was expected to travel to New Delhi between August 23 and 25, according to earlier reports. However, the dates were never formally confirmed by Dhaka, and the proposed early visit has now been put on hold as Bangladesh and India continue discussions on several sensitive issues.

The uncertainty comes at a delicate time in relations between the neighbouring countries. One of the most significant issues is Bangladesh’s request for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in India since leaving Bangladesh in August 2024 following widespread political unrest.

Dhaka has repeatedly asked New Delhi to hand over Hasina, while India has said the request is being examined through the appropriate legal process. The issue remains a major point of discussion between the two governments and has complicated efforts to improve bilateral relations. Despite the delay, diplomatic engagement between Dhaka and New Delhi continues. Indian officials have indicated that India remains interested in welcoming Rahman, while Bangladesh has also kept the possibility of a high-level visit open.

The proposed meeting would be significant because it could give Rahman and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi an opportunity to discuss some of the most important issues affecting bilateral ties. These include trade, border management, connectivity, energy cooperation and water-sharing arrangements. Relations between India and Bangladesh have faced considerable strain since the change of government in Dhaka in 2024. The political transition and Hasina’s continued presence in India have added complications to an otherwise strategically important relationship.

For India, stable relations with Bangladesh are important because of the countries’ close geographic, economic and security links. Bangladesh also plays an important role in India’s connectivity with its northeastern states. For Dhaka, maintaining constructive ties with New Delhi is equally important for trade, regional connectivity and economic cooperation. The failure of the early-August plan does not necessarily mean that the visit has been cancelled altogether. Discussions over a possible trip later in the month are reportedly continuing, although no new date has been officially announced.

If an August visit eventually takes place, it could provide an opportunity for both sides to address their differences directly and explore a fresh framework for bilateral cooperation. However, the continuing dispute over Sheikh Hasina is likely to remain one of the most sensitive issues in any talks between the two governments. The focus remains on whether Dhaka and New Delhi can reach an understanding on the outstanding matters and agree on a suitable date for Rahman’s first official India visit as Bangladesh’s prime minister.
