Bangladesh and China have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen economic and infrastructure cooperation, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attending the signing ceremony in Mongla, Bagerhat. The agreement was signed on Thursday morning between Invest Bangladesh and China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC). Saleh Ahmed, a member of Invest Bangladesh's Industrial Zone Division, represented Bangladesh, while Li Chongyang, Chairman of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, signed on behalf of the Chinese side.
Invest Bangladesh Chairman Ashik Chowdhury and CRCC Chairman Dai Hegen were also present at the event. The MoU is expected to open up fresh avenues for Chinese investment and bilateral economic collaboration in several key sectors, including infrastructure, transportation, logistics, manufacturing, energy, environmental protection and skill development.
Following the signing, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held discussions with members of the Chinese delegation and called for greater Chinese investment in Bangladesh. He stressed the importance of expanding industrial activities and strengthening economic partnerships between the two countries. The Prime Minister also outlined plans to establish additional industrial facilities in Mongla. He said the government would accelerate infrastructure development to ensure reliable electricity and gas supplies, helping stimulate economic growth from Mongla towards the country's northern regions.
Rahman expressed appreciation to the Chinese delegation for providing employment opportunities to Bangladeshi workers in Chinese companies operating across the Middle East. Describing the occasion as significant and encouraging, he acknowledged China's contribution to strengthening Bangladesh's economic foundations.
The Prime Minister arrived in Mongla by helicopter at approximately 9:50 am local time. His visit also includes laying the foundation stone for two container jetties and associated infrastructure works under the Mongla Port Expansion and Modernisation Project.
