At Least Five Killed After Amazon Prime Air Cargo Plane Crashes at Miami Airport

At least five people were killed and five others injured after an Amazon Prime Air cargo aircraft overran a runway and crashed while attempting to land at Miami International Airport, authorities said. The Boeing 767-300 freighter, operating as Prime Air Flight 7598 and flown by 21 Air on behalf of Amazon, was landing at the airport shortly before 2 p.m. local time on Sunday when it went beyond the end of the runway. The aircraft subsequently struck vehicles in an area near the airport before coming to a stop and catching fire.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene after the crash, with more than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responding. Firefighters battled the flames while rescue teams searched the damaged aircraft and vehicles for survivors. Authorities said five people died in the incident, while five others were injured. Three of those injured were reported to be in critical condition.

The cargo aircraft had arrived in Miami from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Boeing 767 involved in the accident is around 32 years old and had previously operated as a passenger aircraft before being converted into a freighter. However, investigators have not indicated that the aircraft's age was a factor in the crash.

The accident caused significant disruption at Miami International Airport, with airport authorities temporarily closing runways and taxiways while emergency crews dealt with the wreckage. The disruption resulted in flight delays and cancellations, although airport operations gradually resumed as the crash site was secured.

The cause of the accident has not yet been established. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have launched an investigation into the crash. Amazon confirmed that an aircraft operating for its Prime Air network had been involved in the accident and said it was working with authorities. The company expressed concern for those affected and said its focus was on supporting the victims, their families and the investigation.

The crash comes as investigators begin what is expected to be a detailed examination of the aircraft and the circumstances surrounding the landing.
