Anthropic has named Irina Ghose as its managing director for India, the company behind the Claude chatbot announced on Friday, as it aims to strengthen its presence in the country. India is the second-largest market for Claude.ai, similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, with major language model developers actively expanding their products there. According to Anthropic’s latest Economic Index, Indian users show a strong emphasis on technical applications, with nearly half of all Claude.ai activity focused on computing and mathematical tasks.

Ghose, formerly the managing director of Microsoft India, brings over 30 years of experience in the technology sector. At Microsoft, she drove enterprise AI adoption across industries such as finance, manufacturing, healthcare, technology services, and government. “Irina’s experience in scaling technology businesses and leading enterprise transformation makes her the perfect choice as we expand,” said Chris Ciauri, Anthropic’s international managing director. “As we grow our teams and deepen engagement across India’s public and private sectors, Irina will ensure our approach reflects local insights and aligns with our mission.”

Anthropic plans to launch its India office in Bengaluru next month, its second in the Asia Pacific after Tokyo. The company intends to deploy AI for social impact in areas like education, healthcare, and agriculture, while supporting key industries through strategic collaborations with Indian enterprises, startups, and nonprofits.

Backed by Alphabet’s Google and Amazon, Anthropic is looking to raise around $10 billion in a funding round led by Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC and Coatue Management, valuing the company at $350 billion. “Indian organisations are moving from experimentation to applied AI, where trust, safety, and long-term impact are as important as innovation,” Ghose said in a statement.
