Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday launched India’s first National IED Data Management System (NIDMS), a major initiative aimed at reinforcing the nation’s counter-IED framework and internal security capabilities. Developed by the National Security Guard (NSG), NIDMS is a secure digital platform designed to systematically collect, organise and share information related to Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) at the national level.

Speaking at the virtual inauguration, Shah said the platform would support state police forces and security agencies by enabling structured data collection, consolidation and information sharing on IED incidents. He emphasised that the system would significantly strengthen post-blast investigations and improve coordination among law enforcement and security agencies nationwide.

The platform serves as a unified repository of IED-related data, allowing State Police, Central Armed Police Forces and other central agencies to access, analyse and exchange critical information. This integrated, data-driven approach will help authorities detect patterns, monitor trends and derive actionable intelligence from past cases, ultimately enhancing preparedness and response to IED threats. NSG Director General Brighu Srinivasan stated that the system was developed over the past eleven months through close collaboration with various agencies, describing it as a first-of-its-kind initiative in India.

Officials added that NIDMS would improve inter-agency cooperation by standardising data formats and investigative procedures, minimising duplication of work and ensuring that essential information is readily available to all stakeholders involved in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency efforts. The platform is also expected to strengthen forensic analysis, training programmes and operational planning related to bomb disposal and blast investigations.

Given that IEDs continue to pose a serious security threat in several regions, often used by terrorist and insurgent groups against security forces and civilians, NIDMS aims to boost the country’s capacity to prevent such attacks and respond more effectively through advanced technology and data analytics. The launch of NIDMS reflects the government’s focus on leveraging modern digital solutions to enhance internal security. Officials noted that the platform will continue to evolve, incorporating new datasets and analytical tools to address emerging challenges and further strengthen India’s counter-IED ecosystem.
