All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) led by Asaduddin Owaisi has terminated its recent electoral alliance with Humayun Kabir's Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections. Owaisi has also cancelled all his scheduled campaign rallies in the state, citing irreconcilable differences triggered by a damaging political controversy.

This comes just three weeks after the March 22 alliance announcement, where the two parties planned a joint contest across nearly 182 seats, with AIMIM targeting key Muslim-dominated constituencies. Past frictions, including AIMIM's 2025 skepticism over Kabir's BJP ties, had resurfaced, making the partnership short-lived.

With polling dates locked for April 23 and 29 (results on May 4), AIMIM's decision to go solo could fragment opposition votes in areas like Murshidabad and parts of Kolkata, potentially benefiting TMC or BJP. Political analysts note this mirrors volatile alliances in other states, where last-minute breaks have swung tight races—think Maharashtra's fractured fronts last year.

Owaisi's Hyderabad-centric party has long eyed Bengal expansion, but such scandals underscore the risks in a polarized landscape. TMC had already slammed the tie-up as "opportunistic," and this rift hands rivals fresh ammunition. Voter turnout in minority pockets will be key; watch for realignments as campaigns intensify.
