Tamil Nadu’s political landscape saw a significant development after the Assembly seats of Madurantakam, Dharapuram, and Perundurai were officially declared vacant following the resignation of three AIADMK MLAs who later joined the ruling TVK camp. Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar confirmed that the resignations submitted by Maragatham Kumaravel (Madurantakam), P. Sathyabama (Dharapuram), and K.S. Jayakumar (Perundurai) had been accepted after due verification. The three legislators reportedly met the Speaker in person before their resignations were approved.

Soon after stepping down, the MLAs extended support to actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), triggering fresh political debate in the state. The development comes at a time when tensions within the AIADMK have already been visible after the recent confidence vote in the Assembly.

The resignations have reduced the AIADMK’s strength in the Tamil Nadu Assembly and strengthened the ruling side ahead of possible by-elections in the three constituencies. Political observers believe the bypolls could become an important test for both the opposition and the emerging TVK-led political front.

AIADMK leadership strongly criticized the move and accused the ruling camp of encouraging defections for political gain. Senior party leaders claimed the resignations were part of a larger strategy to weaken the opposition ahead of future elections. Leaders from the ruling side dismissed the allegations and said the MLAs had voluntarily chosen to leave AIADMK due to dissatisfaction with the party’s internal functioning and leadership direction.

The three constituencies — Madurantakam, Dharapuram, and Perundurai — are considered politically important regions in Tamil Nadu. With the seats now vacant, the Election Commission is expected to announce bypoll dates in the coming months. The latest political shift has also sparked speculation about whether more legislators could switch sides in the near future. Analysts say the developments may influence alliance calculations and campaign strategies ahead of the next major electoral contest in Tamil Nadu. As both the ruling camp and opposition prepare for the upcoming political battle, the focus will now shift to voter sentiment in the three vacant constituencies and the broader impact of the resignations on Tamil Nadu politics.
